Ingredients

  • 1 tbs toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 tsp sumac
  • 1 tsp dried thyme leaves
  • 0.5 tsp sea salt

Instructions

  • Combine 1 tablespoon of toasted sesame seeds, 1 teaspoon of sumac, 1 teaspoon of dried thyme leaves, and 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt in a mortar.
  • Using a pestle, grind the mixture until it becomes a relatively smooth powder.
  • Transfer the homemade za'atar to an airtight jar and store in a cool, dark place.
  • Use to season meats, vegetables, sprinkle on hummus, or mix with olive oil for a delicious dip.

Notes

Store your homemade za'atar in an airtight container in a cool, dark place for up to 3 months to maintain its freshness. For an authentic touch, toast your own sesame seeds in a dry pan over medium heat until golden and fragrant before grinding. Adjust the salt and sumac to your preferred taste.
