Ingredients

  • 1.5 lb beef sirloin cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 0.5 cup soy sauce
  • 0.25 cup mirin
  • 2 tbsp sake optional
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar packed
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger grated
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 ea red bell pepper cut into 1-inch pieces (optional)
  • 1 ea green bell pepper cut into 1-inch pieces (optional)
  • 0.5 ea red onion cut into 1-inch pieces (optional)
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds for garnish
  • 2 ea green onions sliced

Instructions

  • 1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, mirin, sake (if using), brown sugar, grated ginger, minced garlic, and sesame oil to create the teriyaki marinade.
  • 2. Add the beef cubes to the marinade, ensuring all pieces are well coated. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or ideally 2-4 hours for maximum flavor. (You can marinate overnight if preferred).
  • 3. If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for at least 30 minutes prior to grilling to prevent them from burning.
  • 4. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. While the grill is heating, thread the marinated beef cubes onto skewers, alternating with bell pepper and onion pieces if using.
  • 5. Grill the skewers for 3-4 minutes per side, turning occasionally, until the beef is cooked to your desired doneness and has a nice char. You may baste with any leftover marinade (ensure it's boiled first to kill bacteria) during the last few minutes of cooking for extra glaze.
  • 6. Remove the skewers from the grill and let them rest for a few minutes.
  • 7. Garnish with a sprinkle of sesame seeds and sliced green onions before serving immediately.

Notes

For best flavor, marinate the beef for at least 2 hours, or even overnight. If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for at least 30 minutes to prevent burning on the grill. Serve with steamed rice and a sprinkle of extra sesame seeds and sliced green onions. You can also add bell peppers, onions, or pineapple chunks to the skewers for extra flavor and color.
