Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup dried hibiscus flowers food grade
  • 4 cups water
  • 1/4 cup sugar or honey optional
  • 1 whole lime or lemon sliced for garnish

Instructions

  • **For Hot Brew:** Bring 4 cups of fresh water to a rolling boil.
  • Place 1/2 cup dried hibiscus flowers into a heatproof teapot or pitcher.
  • Pour hot water over the flowers.
  • Steep for 5 to 10 minutes, depending on desired strength.
  • Strain to remove flowers, sweeten to taste, and serve hot or chill for iced tea.
  • **For Cold Brew:** Place 1/2 cup dried hibiscus flowers in a large pitcher.
  • Add 4 cups of cold filtered water.
  • Cover and refrigerate for 4 to 8 hours, or overnight.
  • Strain, sweeten to taste, and serve over ice.
  • **For Authentic Agua de Jamaica:** Rinse 1/2 cup dried hibiscus flowers under cold water.
  • In a saucepan, combine rinsed flowers and 4 cups water.
  • Bring to a boil, then simmer on low for 10-15 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and let steep for another 10-20 minutes.
  • Strain liquid through a fine-mesh sieve into a pitcher, pressing on flowers. Discard flowers.
  • Add 1/4 cup sugar or honey to the warm concentrate and stir until dissolved.
  • Cool completely, then chill. Serve over ice, garnished with fresh lime or lemon slices.

Notes

Adjust sweetener to your preference. For extra flavor, add a cinnamon stick or a few cloves during the hot brew/simmering process. Cold brew can steep longer for a stronger flavor. Store prepared tea in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Always use food-grade dried hibiscus flowers.
