Ingredients
  

  • 113 g unsalted butter softened
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.75 cup light brown sugar packed
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1.5 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 tsp baking soda
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8x8 inch (20x20 cm) baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides for easy removal.
  • In a large bowl, cream together the softened unsalted butter, granulated sugar, and light brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  • In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  • Fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips.
  • Press the cookie dough evenly into the prepared 8x8 inch pan.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs (not wet batter).
  • Let cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before lifting out with the parchment paper and cutting into squares.

Notes

For extra richness, brown the butter before mixing with the sugars. Add a handful of chopped walnuts or pecans for a delightful crunch. Ensure bars cool completely before cutting for clean slices. Store at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or freeze for longer storage.
