Agua de Jamaica: Easy Hibiscus Tea

A vibrant, tangy, and refreshing drink made from dried hibiscus flowers, deeply popular in Mexico and other parts of Latin America. Its striking ruby-red color and invigorating flavor make it a perfect beverage for any time of day, especially on a warm day.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup dried hibiscus flowers (flor de jamaica)
  • 8 cups water
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (or to taste)
  • 1/2 lime juice (optional
  • fresh mint leaves (optional
  • ice cubes

Instructions
 

  • Rinse the dried hibiscus flowers under cold water to remove any dust.
  • In a large saucepan, bring 4 cups of water to a boil.
  • Add the rinsed hibiscus flowers to the boiling water. Remove from heat, cover, and let steep for 15-20 minutes. The longer it steeps, the stronger the flavor and color.
  • Strain the hibiscus concentrate into a pitcher, discarding the spent flowers.
  • Stir in the remaining 4 cups of cold water and the sugar until dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness as desired.
  • Chill the Agua de Jamaica in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or until thoroughly cold.
  • Serve over ice, optionally garnished with a slice of lime and fresh mint leaves.

Notes

Adjust sugar to your preference; for a healthier option, use less or a sugar substitute. For extra zing, add a squeeze of fresh lime juice or a few mint sprigs when serving. This drink is best served chilled over ice. You can also enjoy it warm, like a traditional tea, by skipping the chilling step.
