Ingredients

  • 0.25 cup dried hibiscus flowers
  • 4 cups hot filtered water
  • 0.25 cup sugar optional (adjust to taste)
  • 4 cups cold filtered water for diluting (or ice)

Instructions

  • Place 1/4 cup dried hibiscus flowers in a quart-size Mason jar or pitcher.
  • Pour in 4 cups of hot filtered water and stir well. Let steep for 15-30 minutes, or until the liquid is deep red.
  • Strain the hibiscus liquid through a fine-mesh sieve into another pitcher or jar, pressing on the solids to extract all liquid. Discard the spent flowers.
  • If desired, add sugar or honey to the warm tea and stir until dissolved.
  • Add 4 cups of cold filtered water to dilute the concentrate, or fill glasses with ice and pour the concentrate over it, adding water to taste.
  • Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1-2 hours before serving for best results. Serve over ice with a slice of lime or fresh mint, if desired.

Notes

For a sweeter drink, add sugar or honey to taste while the tea is still warm. Serve with lime wedges or fresh mint for extra flavor. Can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. For a stronger flavor, steep the flowers for longer. You can also adjust the amount of cold water to reach your preferred strength.
