Ube Halo-Halo: A Taste of Home
Ube Halo-Halo is a quintessential Filipino dessert, a vibrant and refreshing concoction of shaved ice, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and a generous scoop of ube halaya or ube ice cream. It embodies the warmth and joy of Filipino gatherings.
Ingredients
- 1 cup shaved ice per serving
- 2 tbsp sweetened red beans
- 2 tbsp sweetened white beans
- 2 tbsp sweetened saba banana sliced
- 2 tbsp nata de coco coconut jelly
- 2 tbsp kaong sugar palm fruit
- 1 slice leche flan
- 1 scoop ube halaya or ube ice cream
- 0.25 cup evaporated milk chilled
Instructions
- In a tall glass or bowl, layer the sweetened red beans, white beans, saba banana, nata de coco, and kaong at the bottom.
- Fill the glass with shaved ice, mounding it towards the top.
- Drizzle generously with evaporated milk over the shaved ice.
- Carefully place a slice of leche flan and a scoop of ube halaya or ube ice cream on top of the shaved ice.
- Serve immediately with a long spoon, encouraging diners to mix all the ingredients together before eating.
Notes
For a truly authentic experience, use homemade ube halaya. You can customize your Halo-Halo with various toppings like sweetened plantains, macapuno (coconut sport), or even a sprinkle of toasted pinipig (pounded rice flakes). Serve immediately to prevent the ice from melting too much.
