Switchel: The Original Energy Drink
Switchel, also known as haymaker's punch, is a traditional colonial American beverage designed to refresh and re-energize. Made with apple cider vinegar, ginger, and a natural sweetener, it's a historical thirst quencher.
Ingredients
- 4 cup water
- 0.5 cup apple cider vinegar
- 0.25 cup molasses or honey to taste
- 1 inch fresh ginger grated or thinly sliced
Instructions
- Combine water, apple cider vinegar, molasses or honey, and grated ginger in a large pitcher or jar.
- Stir well until the sweetener is fully dissolved. Make sure to taste and adjust the sweetness or ginger level to your preference.
- Cover the pitcher or jar and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and to chill thoroughly. For a stronger ginger flavor, let it infuse longer.
- Strain out the grated ginger before serving, if preferred, for a smoother drink, or leave it in for a more intense ginger experience.
- Serve chilled over ice in your favorite glass.
Notes
Adjust sweetener to taste. Molasses offers a richer flavor and darker color, while honey provides a lighter, sweeter note. You can also experiment with spices like a pinch of cinnamon or a slice of lemon for variation. For an extra kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper. Serve chilled over ice, and consider garnishing with a lemon slice or a sprig of mint.
