Switchel: Refreshing Summer Drink
Switchel, also known as Haymaker's Punch, is an ancient, naturally refreshing beverage combining apple cider vinegar, fresh ginger, and a touch of sweetness. Historically consumed by farmers to rehydrate, it's packed with electrolytes and beneficial enzymes.
Ingredients
- 1 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1 inch fresh ginger peeled and grated
- 4 cups water cold
- 0.25 cup maple syrup or molasses or to taste
Instructions
- Combine apple cider vinegar, grated ginger, cold water, and your chosen sweetener (maple syrup or molasses) in a large pitcher.
- Stir well until the sweetener is fully dissolved and all ingredients are thoroughly mixed.
- Taste the switchel and adjust the amount of sweetener if desired, adding more for a sweeter drink or less for a tangier profile.
- Refrigerate the mixture for at least 1 hour before serving. This allows the flavors to meld together and ensures the drink is perfectly chilled.
- Serve the Switchel over ice, garnished with a slice of lemon or a sprig of mint if desired.
Notes
Serve chilled over ice. Adjust sweetener to taste. For an extra kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a slice of lemon. Store in the refrigerator for up to a week. Feel free to experiment with different natural sweeteners like honey.
