Switchel: Healthy Haymaker's Punch
Switchel, also known as Haymaker's Punch, is a traditional refreshing drink made with apple cider vinegar, fresh ginger, and a natural sweetener. It's known for its hydrating and revitalizing properties, perfect for a hot day.
Ingredients
- 4 cup water
- 2 inch fresh ginger peeled and thinly sliced or grated
- 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar unfiltered
- 1/4 cup maple syrup or molasses (adjust to taste)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine water and ginger. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
- Remove from heat and let the ginger steep for 15-20 minutes to infuse its flavor. For a stronger ginger flavor, steep longer or lightly crush the ginger before simmering.
- Strain the ginger from the liquid using a fine-mesh sieve and discard the ginger solids. Let the liquid cool slightly.
- Stir in the apple cider vinegar and maple syrup (or molasses) until well combined. Taste and adjust sweetener if desired.
- Pour the Switchel into a glass pitcher or jar. Chill thoroughly in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving.
- Serve cold over ice. You can garnish with a lemon slice or a sprig of mint.
Notes
For extra zing, lightly crush the ginger before simmering. Adjust sweetener to taste. Serve well-chilled, and consider adding a splash of sparkling water for a fizzy kick. Store in the refrigerator for up to a week.
