Switchel: Haymaker's Punch Recipe
A refreshing and rehydrating drink with roots in 17th-century Caribbean and colonial America, known for its blend of ginger, vinegar, and sweetener.
Ingredients
- 4 cups water
- 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 cup maple syrup or honey or molasses
- 1 inch mature ginger root grated
Instructions
- Combine water, apple cider vinegar, maple syrup (or chosen sweetener), and grated ginger in a large pitcher or jar.
- Stir well to combine all ingredients.
- Taste and adjust sweetness or ginger intensity if desired.
- Chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving.
- Serve cold over ice.
Notes
Adjust sweetness to taste. Use fresh, mature ginger for best flavor. For a stronger ginger kick, let the grated ginger steep in the water and vinegar for an hour before chilling. Can be strained before serving if you prefer a smoother drink, or leave the ginger in for added texture. Store in the refrigerator for up to a week. Great after exercise or on a hot day.
