Swedish Smörgåstårta: Easy & Delicious
A traditional Swedish savory sandwich cake layered with bread, creamy spreads, smoked salmon, delicate shrimp, and hard-boiled eggs, perfect for celebrations.
Ingredients
- 12 slices white sandwich bread crusts removed
- 0.5 cup mayonnaise light or regular
- 0.5 cup cream cheese softened
- 0.25 cup fresh dill chopped
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice freshly squeezed
- 0.5 teaspoon salt
- 0.25 teaspoon black pepper ground
- 4 ounces smoked salmon thinly sliced
- 0.5 pound cooked small shrimp peeled and deveined
- 3 large hard-boiled eggs chopped
- 0.25 cup red onion finely minced
- 0.25 cup cucumber thinly sliced for garnish
- 2 tablespoons fresh dill sprigs for garnish
- 2 wedges lemon for garnish
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, combine mayonnaise, softened cream cheese, chopped fresh dill, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Mix until smooth and well combined. This will be your base spread and 'frosting'.
- Divide the bread slices into three groups of four. Lay 4 slices of bread side-by-side on a serving platter to form a rectangle. Spread a thin layer of the cream cheese mixture over the bread.
- For the first filling layer, arrange the smoked salmon evenly over the cream cheese mixture. Top with another layer of 4 bread slices, spreading them with the cream cheese mixture.
- For the second filling layer, combine the cooked shrimp and half of the remaining cream cheese mixture in a bowl. Spread this mixture over the second layer of bread.
- Top with the final 4 slices of bread. Use the remaining cream cheese mixture to 'frost' the entire top and sides of the sandwich cake, spreading it evenly like you would with a regular cake.
- Chill the Smörgåstårta in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the bread to absorb the moisture from the fillings and become soft and cake-like.
- Before serving, garnish the top with thinly sliced cucumber, fresh dill sprigs, lemon wedges, and chopped hard-boiled eggs. You can also add a few whole shrimp for extra visual appeal. Slice and serve cold.
Notes
For best results, prepare the Smörgåstårta at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, before serving to allow the flavors to meld and the bread to soften. Cover tightly with plastic wrap to prevent drying. You can vary the fillings with ham, roast beef, or other seafood. Garnish generously with fresh herbs, lemon wedges, and additional seafood for a stunning presentation.
