Ingredients

  • 1.5 lb boneless skinless chicken breast cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.5 tsp cumin
  • 0.5 tsp smoked paprika
  • 0.75 cup ketchup
  • 0.25 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 0.25 cup honey
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.5 tsp onion powder
  • 0.25 tsp cayenne pepper or more to taste
  • 1 tbsp hot sauce like Cholula or Tabasco

Instructions

  • 1. Prepare the chicken: Pat chicken breast cubes dry with paper towels. In a bowl, toss chicken with 0.5 tsp salt, 0.25 tsp black pepper, 1 tsp garlic powder, 0.5 tsp cumin, and 0.5 tsp smoked paprika until evenly coated.
  • 2. Make the Hot Honey BBQ Sauce: In a medium saucepan, combine ketchup, apple cider vinegar, honey, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, 1 tsp chili powder, 0.5 tsp garlic powder, 0.5 tsp onion powder, cayenne pepper, and hot sauce.
  • 3. Simmer the sauce: Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to low and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until slightly thickened, stirring occasionally.
  • 4. Cook the chicken: Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a large skillet or pan over medium-high heat. Add the seasoned chicken and cook for 7-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until browned on all sides and cooked through (internal temperature reaches 165°F or 74°C).
  • 5. Combine and serve: Pour the prepared hot honey BBQ sauce over the cooked chicken in the skillet, tossing gently to coat all the pieces evenly. Serve immediately with your favorite sides like rice, warm tortillas, or a fresh green salad.

Notes

Serve with warm tortillas, rice, or a fresh salad to balance the heat. For a milder version, reduce the amount of chili powder or hot sauce in the BBQ sauce. This recipe works well with chicken thighs, pork tenderloin, or even firm tofu for a vegetarian option.
