Korean Corn Dog Delight
A popular South Korean street food, the Korean Corn Dog is a delightful snack featuring a hot dog or cheese (or both) on a stick, coated in a sweet, crunchy batter, often topped with sugar and various sauces.
Ingredients
- 8 ounces mozzarella cheese cut into 1-inch thick sticks
- 4 count hot dogs cut in half (optional)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 2 cups Panko breadcrumbs
- 4 cups vegetable oil for deep frying
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar for coating
- Ketchup to serve
- Mustard to serve
- Sweet Chili Sauce to serve
Instructions
- If using hot dogs, cut them in half. Cut mozzarella cheese into thick sticks. Skewer the hot dog pieces and cheese sticks. For an authentic experience, use one skewer for half a hot dog and half a cheese stick.
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add milk and egg, then whisk until a smooth, thick batter forms. Pour the batter into a tall glass for easier dipping.
- Place the Panko breadcrumbs in a shallow dish.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Dip each skewered hot dog/cheese stick into the batter, ensuring it's fully coated. Let any excess drip off, then immediately roll it in the Panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere.
- Carefully place 1-2 corn dogs into the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pot. Fry for 3-5 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy. The cheese should be melted and gooey inside.
- Remove the fried corn dogs and place them on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Immediately roll each hot corn dog in granulated sugar while still hot.
- Serve warm with a drizzle of ketchup, mustard, and sweet chili sauce as desired. Enjoy the sweet, crunchy, and cheesy delight!
Notes
For variations, try using half a hot dog and half a mozzarella stick on one skewer. You can also experiment with different toppings like crispy ramen crumbs or diced potatoes in the batter for extra crunch. Serve immediately with your favorite sauces like ketchup, mustard, or sweet chili.
