Jamu: Turmeric Ginger Elixir
An ancient Indonesian herbal tonic, this Jamu concentrate blends fresh turmeric and ginger with warming spices for an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich elixir. Enjoy it hot or cold.
Ingredients
- 4 cup water
- 0.5 cup fresh turmeric grated
- 2 tablespoon ginger powder
- 1 pinch black pepper optional (for enhanced turmeric absorption)
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, bring 4 cups of water to a boil.
- Add the grated fresh turmeric, ginger powder, and optional black pepper to the boiling water.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
- Remove from heat and let the concentrate cool slightly.
- Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove any solids, pressing to extract all liquid.
- Pour the Jamu concentrate into a clean, airtight bottle or jar and refrigerate. It can be stored for up to one week.
Notes
To enjoy as a hot tea, mix 1 tablespoon of Jamu Concentrate with 1 cup of hot water. For a cold spritzer, mix with cold water or sparkling water, add ice, and a squeeze of lime juice or a hint of tamarind paste. For an indulgent twist, blend a tablespoon of the concentrate with warm milk and a teaspoon of cocoa powder for a 'Jamu hot cocoa'.
