Inspired by the vibrant flavors found at bustling food bazaars, these easy-to-make chicken skewers are marinated in a sweet and savory sauce, then grilled or pan-fried to perfection. They're a crowd-pleasing snack or a light meal, perfect for sharing.
Ingredients
- 500 g boneless skinless chicken breast
- 0.25 cup soy sauce
- 2 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp sesame oil
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 0.5 tsp red pepper flakes optional
- 12 wooden skewers soaked in water
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, whisk together soy sauce, honey, sesame oil, rice vinegar, ginger, minced garlic, and red pepper flakes (if using).
- Add the chicken cubes to the marinade, ensuring all pieces are well coated. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 4 hours.
- Preheat your grill to medium-high heat or a large skillet over medium-high heat. If using a skillet, lightly grease it.
- Thread the marinated chicken pieces onto the soaked wooden skewers, leaving a small space between each piece.
- Grill or cook the skewers for 3-4 minutes per side, turning occasionally, until the chicken is cooked through and lightly charred. For a glossy finish, brush with any remaining marinade during the last few minutes of cooking (ensure it's cooked thoroughly after brushing).
- Remove from heat and let rest for a couple of minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped fresh cilantro or sesame seeds if desired.
Notes
For extra flavor, add bell peppers and onions to the skewers. You can substitute chicken with pork, beef, or firm tofu. Serve with a side of rice or a fresh salad. Marinade works best if chicken is soaked for at least 30 minutes, or even overnight.
