Easy Banh Mi Steak Sandwich
A quick and delicious fusion recipe, these Banh Mi-style Steak Sandwiches feature tender grilled steak, tangy quick-pickled vegetables, and fresh herbs, all nestled in a crispy baguette.
Ingredients
- 1 pound flank steak or sirloin
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon fish sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger grated
- 4 hoagie rolls or baguettes split and toasted
- 0.5 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon sriracha optional
- 1 large carrot julienned
- 0.5 large cucumber thinly sliced
- 1 jalapeno thinly sliced optional
- 0.25 cup fresh cilantro chopped
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 0.25 teaspoon salt
- 0.25 cup water
Instructions
- Prepare the quick pickles: In a small bowl, combine rice vinegar, sugar, salt, and water. Add julienned carrots, sliced cucumber, and jalapeño (if using). Let sit for at least 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Marinate the steak: In a shallow dish, whisk together soy sauce, fish sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Add the flank steak, ensuring it's fully coated. Marinate for at least 15 minutes, or up to 30 minutes at room temperature.
- Grill the steak: Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. Cook the steak for 4-6 minutes per side for medium-rare, or until desired doneness. Remove from heat, tent with foil, and let rest for 5-10 minutes before thinly slicing against the grain.
- Prepare the sriracha mayo: In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise and sriracha (if using) until well combined.
- Assemble the sandwiches: Lightly toast the hoagie rolls or baguettes. Spread sriracha mayo generously on both sides of each roll. Layer with thinly sliced steak, drained quick pickles, and fresh cilantro.
- Serve immediately: Enjoy your delicious homemade Banh Mi-style Steak Sandwiches warm.
Notes
For extra spice, add more sriracha to the mayo or include extra sliced fresh chilies. Any cut of steak suitable for grilling, like sirloin or ribeye, can be used. Serve with a side of sweet potato fries or a light green salad for a complete meal.
