Crispy Air Fryer Onions
A quick and easy recipe for perfectly crispy air-fried onions, a delicious side dish or snack that's healthier than traditional deep-fried versions.
Ingredients
- 1 large onion sliced into 1/4-inch rings
- 0.5 cup all-purpose flour
- 0.25 cup cornstarch
- 1 tsp salt
- 0.5 tsp black pepper
- 0.5 tsp paprika optional
- 0.25 tsp garlic powder optional
- 1 cup milk or buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- amount cooking spray or 1-2 tbsp oil for spraying
Instructions
- Prepare onions: Peel and slice the large onion into 1/4-inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set aside.
- Make batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, salt, pepper, paprika (if using), and garlic powder (if using). In another bowl, whisk together the milk and egg.
- Dip onions: Dip each onion ring first into the milk-egg mixture, then dredge in the flour mixture, ensuring it's fully coated. Shake off excess batter.
- Preheat air fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 5 minutes.
- Air fry: Arrange a single layer of coated onion rings in the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd. Spray lightly with cooking spray or brush with a little oil.
- Cook in batches: Air fry for 10-15 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy. Repeat with remaining onion rings.
- Serve: Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
For extra crispiness, ensure onion rings are in a single layer and don't overcrowd the basket. You can vary seasonings by adding garlic powder, onion powder, or a pinch of cayenne for heat. Serve immediately with ketchup, ranch, or a spicy aioli.
