Switchel: Healthy Summer Drink
A classic, invigorating American beverage, Switchel, also known as Haymaker's Punch, blends tangy apple cider vinegar with spicy ginger and natural sweetness, offering a refreshing and revitalizing drink perfect for hot weather.
Ingredients
- 4 cup water
- 0.5 cup apple cider vinegar unfiltered (like Bragg's)
- 0.25 cup maple syrup or molasses (adjust to taste)
- 1 inch fresh ginger peeled and grated or thinly sliced
Instructions
- Combine water, apple cider vinegar, maple syrup (or molasses), and grated or sliced ginger in a large pitcher or jar.
- Stir well to ensure the sweetener is fully dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness if desired.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 1-2 hours to allow the flavors to meld and chill thoroughly. For a stronger ginger flavor, let it steep longer, even overnight.
- Strain the Switchel before serving to remove the ginger pieces, if desired, or serve with ginger in the drink.
- Serve cold over ice. You can also dilute with sparkling water for a fizzy version.
Notes
Adjust sweetness to taste. For a spicier kick, use freshly grated ginger. Can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. Serve chilled, over ice, or with a splash of sparkling water for extra fizz. Try different natural sweeteners like honey or agave.
