Easy Homemade Teriyaki Chicken
A classic Japanese dish featuring tender chicken glazed in a rich, sweet, and savory homemade teriyaki sauce, perfect for a quick and flavorful meal.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce low sodium
- 2 tablespoons mirin
- 1 tablespoon sake optional
- 1 tablespoon sugar or honey
- 0.5 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tbsp water (slurry)
- 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds for garnish
- 2 stalks green onions chopped for garnish
Instructions
- In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, mirin, sake (if using), sugar, and cornstarch slurry. Set aside.
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add chicken pieces and cook until browned on all sides and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
- Pour the teriyaki sauce mixture over the chicken. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens and coats the chicken, about 2-3 minutes.
- Remove from heat. Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions. Serve immediately over rice or with your favorite side dishes.
Notes
For a thicker sauce, simmer longer. Add a pinch of grated ginger or garlic to the sauce for extra flavor. Serve with white rice and steamed broccoli. Chicken thighs can be used for juicier results.
