A simple, versatile pasta dish perfect for busy weeknights or as a base for culinary challenges. It's a fantastic starting point for exploring new flavors and ingredients.
Ingredients
- 250 g spaghetti or your favorite pasta
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 medium onion finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 can (400g) crushed tomatoes
- 0.5 cup vegetable broth
- 0.25 cup fresh basil chopped (optional)
- 0.25 cup Parmesan cheese grated (for serving)
- to taste salt
- to taste black pepper
Instructions
- Cook pasta according to package directions until al dente. Drain, reserving about 1/2 cup of pasta water.
- While pasta cooks, heat olive oil in a large skillet or pot over medium heat. Add onion and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Pour in crushed tomatoes and vegetable broth. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat and let it cook for 10-15 minutes, allowing flavors to meld. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Add the cooked pasta to the sauce. If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of reserved pasta water until it reaches your desired consistency.
- Stir in fresh basil (if using).
- Serve hot, garnished with grated Parmesan cheese.
Notes
This recipe is highly adaptable. Feel free to add grilled chicken, shrimp, or your favorite sautéed vegetables. Experiment with different sauces like a creamy Alfredo, a vibrant pesto, or a spicy arrabiata for a fresh twist! Garnish with fresh herbs or a sprinkle of chili flakes.
