- 100 g Fish cakes (eomuk) cut into bite-sized pieces
- 2 cups Anchovy broth or water
- 3 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes) adjust to taste
- 1 Tbsp Soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp Sugar
- 1 tsp Minced garlic
- 1 Tbsp Corn syrup or honey (optional) for gloss and sweetness
- 1/2 unit Onion sliced
- 1 cup Cabbage chopped
- 2 units Scallions cut into 2-inch pieces

- 1 Tbsp Sesame oil for finishing
- Toasted sesame seeds for garnish
- Sundae (Korean blood sausage) for serving (store-bought)
- Assorted fried vegetables or dumplings (twigim) for serving (store-bought)
Instructions
- If using hard or frozen rice cakes, soak them in warm water for 10-20 minutes until softened, then drain.
- In a large pan or pot, combine anchovy broth (or water), gochujang, gochugaru, soy sauce, sugar, minced garlic, and corn syrup (if using). Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring until the sauce ingredients are well combined.
- Add the soaked rice cakes, sliced onion, and chopped cabbage to the boiling sauce. Reduce heat to medium and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 8-10 minutes, or until the rice cakes are tender and the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency.
- Stir in the fish cakes and scallions. Continue to simmer for another 2-3 minutes until the fish cakes are cooked through.
- Remove from heat. Stir in the sesame oil and garnish with toasted sesame seeds and halved boiled eggs (if using).
- Serve the hot Tteokbokki immediately, ideally with slices of Sundae and a selection of crispy fried street foods for dipping. Enjoy the authentic Korean street food experience!
Notes
For an authentic street food experience, serve your Tteokbokki with store-bought Sundae (Korean blood sausage) and a selection of fried vegetables or dumplings, perfect for dipping in the leftover spicy sauce. Adjust gochujang and gochugaru to your preferred spice level. You can add ramen noodles (rabokki) for an extra hearty meal.
